The meaning of our name

I think everyone knows sadō, the "way of tea", especially in its ritualistic expression, the ceremony of tea, and kadō, the "way of flowers" or ikebana, the art of floral arrangement. But how many know kōdō, the "way of incense"? It is an ancient form of entertainment, a ceremony during which participants appreciate the fragrances exhaled by the fragrant wood burned according to traditional rules. The game, formed during the Muromachi period (like sadō and kadō, but not so well known), includes various combinations, in units of five incenses; of fragrances to "listen" (verb used traditionally instead of "smell"). Participants express with a pentagram drawing the combinations which, in the case of Genjikō ("Incense of Genji"), are 52 in number, like the chapters of the homonymous novel-masterpiece of Japanese literature, of which they bear the title. The "staves" are often used as ornamental motifs for kimonos, obi or traditional handicrafts.

The design of the Genjikō is also present inside the Japanese Institute, as an architectural and decorative element, in the trellis that separates the exhibition hall and the staircase leading to the upper floor. At the center of each lozenge there is a combination, and therefore a chapter; but I never counted if they were all present ...
